Distributing POAPs securely is crucial to protecting their value. This guide explains how POAP Website, in-app Dispenser, and POAP Kiosk work and why the Dispnser and Kiosk offer stronger security for distributing POAPs.
What is a POAP Website?
A POAP Website is a Distribution Method using a URL linked to the Drop. This URL can also be turned into a static QR code to diplay at IRL events.
What’s wrong with a POAP Website?
While a POAP Website is convenient, their static nature makes them vulnerable to leaks, especially at large events. If someone takes a photo of the QR code or shares the URL, your POAPs may be collected by people who didn't attend.
What is the POAP Home in-app Dispenser?
The in-app Dispenser offers a quick and easy way to securely distribute POAPs. It displays a scannable dynamic QR code that refreshes after each scan. In addition to displaying a dynamic QR code, the Dispenser can generate individual mint link. These links can be copied, pasted, or sent directly from the Dispenser for added flexibility.
Why use the POAP Home in-app Dispenser?
Setting up the in-app Dispenser is simple, all you need is your Drop ID and Edit Code (which can be found in the Drop information at drops.poap.xyz). Visit "How to Set Up the In-App QR Dispenser for Issuing POAPs" for complete instructions.
What is a POAP Kiosk?
A POAP Kiosk creates a dynamic QR code that can be displayed and scanned on any device; or multiple devices at once. Unlike a static QR code, the Kiosk's QR code refreshes after each scan ensuring each attendee receives a unique POAP.
Why use a POAP Kiosk?
The POAP Kiosk dynamic nature makes it far more secure than a typical POAP Website. Since each QR code can only be used once and refreshes after every scan, this method makes it nearly impossible for non-attendees to collect you POAP. You can find instructions here on setting up a POAP Kiosk.
Additionally, a POAP Kiosk can be displayed on multiple devices simultaneously for an unlimited length of time, making it more versatile than a POAP Website. For instance, you might display your POAP Kiosk on an iPad at the check-in of your event and also run a second Kiosk on your phone to distribute the POAP to anyone who may have missed it at check-in.
When is a POAP Website the best option?
For most in-person events, the in-app Dispenser or a POAP Kiosk is preferred. There are still some cases where a POAP Website might make sense or is needed, such as:
- Your event is small and you trust attendees will not leak the URL of your POAP Website or an image of the QR code.
- You do not have a reliable internet connection.
- You do not have a device on which you can display the POAP Kiosk (though, remember, even a phone will do).
If your event doesn't match these criteria, the in-app Dispenser or a POAP Kiosk is your better option for secure distribution.
Why should I care?
As an issuer, ensuring your POAPs are only collected by true attendees of your event is crucial. When POAPs end up in the hands of those who weren't there, it diminishes their value and weakens the emotional connection between issuers and collectors. Each POAP should be a special keepsake that sparks joy for collectors and serves as a reliable record of attendance.
When POAPs are distributed irresponsibly, issuers lose valuable insights about who attended, and collectors may feel their digital collectibles are less meaningful. Secure POAP distribution helps preserve the integrity of each memory and protects the long-term value of the POAP ecosystem.
By choosing secure Distribution Methods like the in-app Dispenser or POAP Kiosk, you can ensure your POAPs remain meaningful, memorable, and truly special for every collector.
