What are the various methods of POAP distribution and their advantages/disadvantages?
Every drop is unique, and POAP has created a variety of different distribution methods to guarantee that POAP issuers can get POAPs into the hands of everyone who shared the experience being commemorated.
Below, you'll find an explanation of the types of POAP distribution methods available and some guiding principles on how to determine which might be best for your drop.
POAP mint links 🔗
Mint links are unique links that entitle collectors to mint one POAP via the standard POAP claim flow. Distributing mint links is one of the more secure methods of POAP distribution, as it's difficult for one person to secure multiple mint links.
Individual mint links are typically better for somewhat smaller POAP issuances, or for those that can automate the distribution using bots on Discord, an email marketing platform, or other tools. One of the advantages of using mint links is that cross-platform distribution is easy: however you plan to distribute, it should be as easy as handing collectors a URL. Optionally, this URL may be represented with a QR code (and/or printed) through a service like QRExplore. Another option for QR code distribution is using the POAP Kiosk, which will allow you to display each POAP's claim QR in sequential order as they're scanned. This can be extremely handy for quickly & easily distributing POAPs during live in-person events or even events that are streamed online.
Mint links are requested during the POAP drop creation process.
Advantages
-
Secure
Disadvantages
-
Time-consuming to distribute one-by-one unless the POAP Kiosk is used.

POAP Secrets 🔍
Secrets are used to distribute POAPs through the use of an issuer-selected word or phrase that collectors use to claim a POAP via the POAP app (iOS/Android). Secrets are one of the more versatile distribution methods. Common use cases are digital meetups like Twitter Spaces or Discord stages where you can share the Secret verbally and close the minting window after the drop ends. Much like a Website, Secrets are a method that prioritizes convenience and usability over trustworthiness; best practices include keeping mint windows short and making sure that Secrets are shared verbally (as opposed to written and sent in the chat).

Ease of distribution
Disadvantages
-
Potential for leaking
-
Requires collectors to have the mobile app ready

Website 💻
A POAP Website is a tool used to distribute POAPs using one URL (which, optionally, may be represented as a QR code). Websites are one of the simpler methods of distribution, as collectors simply need to visit the URL created by the issuer. This distribution method is ideal for situations where you are certain the people who are given this link will not share it elsewhere. A birthday party with close friends is a great example! A Website is not a good option for events with large attendance, those where attendees may leak the URL, or those with high data integrity standards due to the possibility of future utility. Keep in mind that you have a limited number of POAPs to be claimed via a URL and if the link is leaked the actual attendees may not receive their POAPs.

Delivery 📬
Delivery is a tool that whitelists Ethereum wallet addresses to be eligible to mint a particular POAP. Delivery is a practical solution for issuers that have access to the wallet addresses of their collectors, and for issuers who require a high standard of reliability in terms of the correct collectors minting the POAP. Native Web3 communities, including NFT projects, DAOs, and DeFi protocols, are all excellent candidates, as activity deserving of a POAP is frequently recorded on-chain by default.
